In this course students generally undertake their formal and supervised research training over a period of three and half years full-time up to five years full-time or four years part-time up to eight years part-time. Research can be undertaken at Swinburne or any approved external organisation. A major thesis is the sole form of assessment for this award. Candidates are required to carry out research, investigation or development involving the submission of a substantial major thesis embodying the results of that program and presented as a coherent whole work.

Applicants should have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the proposed area of study. The level of academic achievement in prior studies should be of a very high standard. Other relevant activities, including work experience, will be taken into account in assessing applications. Students should also fulfil any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 575 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5) or a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 85 with no band less than 18.
